How Long Does New Concrete Cure Before Coating? 28 Days, Then a Reading
Your slab was poured last month and it looks bone dry. Why the calendar is only half the answer, what number we need before scheduling, and what the trades left behind that has to come off first.

Twenty-eight days from the pour is the floor, not the finish line - the reading decides. New concrete needs a minimum of 28 days before a floor coating, which is the number nearly every resin manufacturer writes into its specification. But a slab poured on a cool October morning can still be too wet at day 45, and a June pour can be ready at day 30. So we book a new-build garage on two conditions together: at least 28 days elapsed, and a moisture result of under 80 percent relative humidity on an in-slab probe, or 3 pounds or less on a calcium chloride test. Here is why the wait exists, what those numbers mean, and what your builder left on the slab that has to come off before anything gets coated.

Why 28 days is a minimum, not a green light
Concrete is mixed with more water than the cement chemistry can consume. The surplus has to leave, and it leaves slowly, from the inside out. Twenty-eight days is the age at which a standard mix is expected to reach its design strength, and it became the coating convention for that reason.
Strength is not the thing that peels a floor, though. Moisture is. A slab can be plenty strong and still be pushing vapor toward the surface fast enough to break the bond of anything sealed over it. As Sherwin-Williams notes in its guidance on green concrete, a new slab can look dry well before it is ready, and conditions can push the real wait out toward 60 days.
One more thing works against a modern garage slab: if it was poured over a sheet vapor retarder, as it should have been, it can only dry upward. Slabs that can breathe both ways dry faster. Doing it right at the pour makes the slab drier for life and slower to be ready once.
The readings we accept
There is no way to eyeball this. Three standard test methods exist, and they are not equivalent.

The probe reads deep conditions and is the one to trust when a number lands close to the line. The calcium chloride dish reads what is coming off the top over three days, which makes it sensitive to how warm and dry the garage was that week. The taped plastic square is a five-minute sanity check, useful for spotting a problem, useless for clearing a slab.
Readings also vary across one floor. A bay near a sunny overhead door dries faster than the corner behind the stairs, so more than one test location matters on anything larger than a single-car slab.
The short version
Wait 28 days at the absolute minimum. Then test, in more than one spot. Under 80 percent RH or 3 pounds or less on calcium chloride, and the slab is ready. Over that, waiting is free and a mitigation coat is not.
What the calendar actually looks like
- Days 1 to 3. Forms come off, foot traffic is fine. The surface looks finished and is nowhere close.
- Day 7. Most of the design strength is there. Vehicles can generally park on it. Still far too wet to seal.
- Day 28. Earliest date we will coat. This is when we test, not when we schedule.
- Days 28 to 60. Where cool, damp, or heavily finished slabs land. Retest rather than assume.
- Beyond 60. Rare in a heated space, common in an unheated garage poured late in the season.
What the builder crew leaves behind
A new slab is rarely a clean slab. Every trade that came through after the concrete crew left something on it, and all of it has to be removed before a coating touches the floor.
- A cure-and-seal membrane. The big one. A film sprayed on to hold moisture in while the concrete cures. It is a plastic layer sitting exactly where the coating needs to bond, and it has to be ground off entirely.
- Laitance. A weak, dusty layer of cement fines brought to the surface during finishing. Anything bonded to it is bonded to something that will crumble.
- A burnished trowel finish. Hard power-trowelling closes the surface into something nearly glassy. Pretty, and the worst possible profile for adhesion.
- Drywall compound and paint. Mud buckets rinsed on the slab, roller trays set down, overspray from the trim crew. Joint compound soaks in and grinds out grey.
- Adhesive and mortar. Tape residue, mortar droppings from a brick crew, form release around the perimeter.
- Rock salt and tire marks. If a truck wintered inside before the doors went on, chloride has been in the top of that slab for months.

Cold slabs and Wisconsin scheduling
Drying needs two things: warmth in the slab and air dry enough to take the moisture. An unheated attached garage in Kenosha, Racine or Lake County offers neither from roughly November through March. Open the overhead door on a damp forty-degree day and you are not helping; you are letting in air that is already close to saturated.
This bites new construction hard, because so many garage slabs get poured in the last good weeks of autumn. A late-October pour can sit at day 60 in December and still read high. The coating itself is not the obstacle. How we book a new-build slab
Call us around the pour date rather than after the drywall goes up. We put the moisture test on the calendar for the 28 day mark, run it in several spots, and only then give you an install date and a number. Our rate does not move for a new slab: $8 a square foot, grind through topcoat, about $3,200 for a two-car bay.
