What a Containment Mat Does to the Concrete Under It

A drip tray catches the brine that would otherwise cross the whole floor - and then holds it against one rectangle of bare slab all winter. Whether that protects or relocates the damage depends entirely on one chore.

On a bare slab, a containment mat relocates the exposure rather than removing it. It genuinely spares the rest of the garage, and that is worth something. But concrete is not damaged by one dose of chloride; it is damaged by staying wet, salty and cycling through freezing. A tray parked under a vehicle keeps its patch of concrete in exactly that state while the rest of the floor dries out between thaws. Empty it after every thaw and the mat is protective. Leave it and you have built a shallow, concentrating brine pond over the one spot you most wanted to protect.

Wet time, not salt quantity, is the variable

Surface scaling is the failure most people picture when they say salt ruined their garage floor: the top few millimeters of paste flaking away, exposing sand and stone. Saturation plus freezing is the engine. Chloride makes it worse by drawing more water in and keeping it there.

That is the whole issue with a mat on bare concrete. Slush drops off the wheel wells and undercarriage overnight, melts into the tray, and stays. Water leaves the top of that puddle by evaporation faster than the salt does, so the solution sitting against the concrete gets saltier over the season rather than weaker. Meanwhile the floor around the mat is doing better than it would have. Nothing drained across it, so it dried. The comparison is not mat versus nothing. It is a small area kept wet all season versus a large area wetted briefly and repeatedly.

What a mat genuinely does well

Plenty, and it is worth being fair about it before the criticism lands.

It keeps meltwater from spreading across the whole bay and refreezing into a sheet you walk on. It catches oil, coolant and transmission drips in one wipeable place. What happens to the slab underneath

Four things, and only the first is obvious.

The brine concentrates. Covered above, and it is the main event. Evaporation removes water, not salt.

There is no dry interval. Concrete tolerates wetting well when it gets to dry afterward. Under a mat that never happens between November and March.

Vapor from below has nowhere to go. A mat is an impermeable sheet lying on a slab, and plenty of older garage slabs in this corridor were poured without a vapor retarder beneath them. Ground moisture rising through the concrete condenses against the underside of the mat, which is why people find a dark, damp rectangle when they pull one up in April. Grit collects at the low corner. Sand and road debris settle in the tray, then get dragged across the slab and over the foam dam when you back out. That abrasion is concentrated exactly where the tire crosses the lip.

Nothing underneath is at risk, so the emptying chore becomes optional rather than load-bearing.
