Control Joints Under a Garage Floor Coating: Filled, Bridged, or Left Visible?
What happens to the saw cuts in your slab when the floor gets coated - the filler we use, the one joint we deliberately leave alone, and why a faint line can return years later.

We fill them. Every saw-cut control joint in your slab gets routed back to clean concrete, packed with a semi-rigid polyurea joint filler, shaved flush, and then coated over with everything else, so the finished floor reads as one unbroken plane. None of that is billed separately, because our rate of $8 per square foot covers the whole floor with the joints already in it. Two honest qualifiers come with that: an isolation joint is a different animal and does not get filled, and a filled joint can show a faint line again years down the road. Both are covered below.

Why the saw cuts exist in the first place
Concrete shrinks while it dries, and shrinking concrete cracks. There is no version of this where it does not. A control joint is the finisher deciding where. A saw blade goes in within hours of the pour and cuts a notch roughly a quarter of the slab depth, creating a deliberate weak line so the shrinkage crack forms down inside the notch instead of wandering across the floor.
Spacing follows slab thickness. Industry guidance from the American Concrete Institute puts joints roughly 24 to 36 times the thickness apart, measured in inches, which on a standard four-inch residential slab lands somewhere between eight and twelve feet. That is why a typical two-car bay carries two or three cuts across it, sometimes with one running front to back. Here is the part that matters locally. An unheated attached garage in Kenosha County swings from below zero in January to the high eighties in July, and the slab travels through that entire range every year. Joints in a heated, conditioned building barely budge. Yours move seasonally, on a cycle, forever - which is exactly why the filler choice is a bigger deal in this climate than the product datasheet suggests.
Fill it, bridge it, or leave it open
Three things can happen to a saw cut when a crew arrives, and only one of them is a finish.

The honoring option is real and legitimate on a warehouse floor. It is almost never what a homeowner wants, because the whole appeal of a coated bay is the uninterrupted surface. Fill is the residential default for a reason.
Why semi-rigid polyurea and not caulk
Reach for a tube of silicone or urethane caulk and you get the opposite of what a coating needs. Soft fillers compress, which leaves the hard topcoat sitting over a squishy strip with no support beneath it. The film cracks along that strip early, and the soft material tends to squeeze upward and telegraph a ridge you can feel through a shoe.
A semi-rigid polyurea joint filler is the material industrial floor specifications actually call for. It is two parts, mixed at the gun, poured in as a liquid, and set within minutes. Cured, it is firm enough that a wheel rolling across the joint transfers its load onto the filler rather than onto the concrete shoulder, yet elastic enough to stretch a little when the slab moves in February. Firm underneath, forgiving in tension - that combination is what lets a hard finish live over a moving joint.
The sequence on install day is short. The cut gets routed or wheeled out to sound concrete first, because a joint packed with dirt, old caulk and flake from a prior coating gives the filler nothing to bond to. It is then overfilled slightly, allowed to set, and shaved flush so no ridge remains. Base coat, flake broadcast and topcoat run straight across from there. Because the polyurea kicks in minutes rather than hours, none of it stretches the job past a single install day. The short version
Saw-cut control joints get routed clean, filled with semi-rigid polyurea, shaved flush and coated over, so they disappear. Isolation joints at the wall and the door stay free to move and are never packed rigid. A faint line reappearing years later is telegraphing, which is cosmetic, not a bond failure.
The one joint we deliberately do not fill
Two different things get called joints, and mixing them up causes real damage. A control joint is that shallow saw cut sitting in the field of the slab, put there to crack. An expansion or isolation joint is a full-depth gap, often with a compressible strip in it, placed where the slab meets something that moves on its own schedule: the foundation wall, a support column, a stoop, or the apron on the far side of the garage door.
Those gaps are engineered to absorb real seasonal movement. Pack one with rigid filler, coat over it, and the slab simply cracks the filler open - usually not neatly along the original line. So they stay working. Depending on the joint we either terminate the coating cleanly at the gap or run a flexible sealant that can take the travel. It costs a visible line in the floor, and that line is the price of not putting a fresh crack through your finish. The threshold at the overhead door gets its own treatment, and it is worth asking any bidder specifically how they intend to end the coating there.
What all of this adds to the bid
Nothing. Joint filling is prep, and prep is the entire reason a professional floor outlasts a kit. Our number is public and flat at $8/sq ft, about ~$3,200 for a standard two-car bay, and that figure already contains the diamond grind, the joint and crack work, the polyurea base coat, the flake broadcast and the clear topcoat. There is no joint line on the invoice because there is no joint line in the pricing model.
When you compare bids, three questions separate a real answer from a vague one. What filler goes in the joints, by name and type. Are the joints routed out first, or filled over whatever is in them. And is the filler shaved flush before the coating goes down. Vagueness on any of the three usually points at the same shortcut that shows up in why garage floor coatings fail, and it pairs with vagueness about whether the slab is being ground or merely etched - the distinction laid out in diamond grinding versus acid etching.

When a faint line comes back
Set expectations honestly here, because nobody else does. A filled and coated joint disappears on install day, and in a flake floor it usually stays gone, since a busy chip pattern breaks up any straight line the eye might follow. On a slab that moves hard seasonally, though, the filler can stretch enough over several years for a hairline to show at the surface, tracing the old cut. The trade calls it telegraphing.
It is cosmetic. The film on either side is still bonded, nothing is lifting, and nothing is peeling - which is the distinction that matters when you are reading fine print, and one we get into in our coating warranty guide. If a line does surface and it bothers you, the joint can be re-opened, re-filled and spot-topcoated without touching the rest of the bay. Two things make it less likely to be noticed at all: a heavier flake broadcast rather than a solid color, and a slab that drains and stays dry rather than one that holds meltwater in the cut all winter.
