Garage Floor Flake Size: Why One Blend Reads Four Different Ways
Same colors, different chip dimension. What changes about how the floor reads from standing height, how it sweeps in winter, and how much clear coat it takes to bury the flake.

Garage floor flake size is a texture decision, not a color decision. Chip dimension changes three things and leaves your blend alone: how far away the pattern stops reading as a pattern, how much relief a broom has to drag across, and how much clear topcoat it takes to bury the chip edges. The same grey-and-white blend at a sixteenth of an inch settles into one flat sandy tone from where you stand; at a quarter inch the pieces separate and the floor reads like terrazzo. And the part almost nobody expects: the bigger chip usually finishes smoother, uses less material by weight, and needs less clear to level out.

The sizes side by side
Vinyl chip comes in a ladder of dimensions. Below is what each one does to a finished residential floor, drawn from how these sizes behave on real slabs rather than how they look in a catalog photo.

Trade write-ups arrive at the same ranking. Stronghold Floors puts a quarter inch ahead of every smaller size for both smoothness and dirt-hiding, and describes an eighth of an inch as leaving a dimpled surface. The pattern language is old: the quarter-inch look descends from terrazzo, and the inch-plus look descends from 1970s rec rooms.
What we stock and what each size costs
Our catalog is organized by blend family first, chip second. The families are the ones on our garage floor colors guide: grey and white, charcoal, warm neutral tan and brown, blue, and a bold accent family for people who want red or black to carry the floor.
- 1/4 in - house standard. On the truck in every blend family. Unless you ask for something else, this is what goes down.
- 1/8 in - stocked. For a tighter, quieter read where the blend behaves more like a color than a pattern.
- 1/16 in and 1/2 to 1 in - ordered in. Available, but they add a lead time to your install date rather than shipping from what we already hold.
No size carries a different rate
Every chip dimension above is $8 a square foot, grind through topcoat, the same number as a standard install. Chip choice changes the look and the material we burn, not the invoice.
Why the same blend reads differently across a bay
Your eye sits about five feet above the slab, and most of a two-car floor is eight to twelve feet away from you. That geometry is the whole story.
At that distance a sixteenth-inch chip falls under the size your eye can separate, so four colors average into one tone. That is why micro-chip floors photograph as solid color. An eighth-inch chip starts resolving at roughly six feet, so the near half of the bay has pattern and the far half does not. A quarter-inch chip resolves everywhere in the room, which keeps all four colors of the blend visible and gives the floor depth.
This is also why a blend you loved on a sample board can land flat once installed. You held the sample eighteen inches from your face. Ask to see it on the floor, and step back to where you will actually stand.
Profile: what the broom feels in February
A flake floor is never perfectly flat, and the chip that leaves the least relief is not the one most people guess. Small pieces land on edge and pack densely, so a thin clear coat leaves a fine grain that never quite disappears. Wider pieces lie flatter, and the clear pools between them and self-levels. Very large plates are smooth on top but leave broader valleys between chips.
That matters more here than it would in a mild climate. What lands on a garage floor between November and March around Kenosha and Racine is not household dust: it is road salt crystals, wet sand, and the grit that drops off a wheel well after a plow run. Grit sits in the profile. On a fine-chip floor with a light topcoat, a push broom rides over it and you end up mopping. One thing chip size does not control is traction. Grip is set by what goes into the clear coat, which is a separate lever with its own trade-offs - covered in how slippery a coated floor really is.
How much clear it takes to bury the flake
Two numbers move with chip size, and both move against intuition.
Broadcast weight. A full broadcast to rejection at a quarter inch runs about 10 pounds per 100 square feet. The same coverage at an eighth of an inch runs closer to 20, per supplier flake coverage figures. Double the material, smaller chip. Small pieces nest tightly instead of overlapping, so it takes far more of them to reach a surface that will not accept another chip.
Clear coat. After the excess is scraped and vacuumed, the topcoat has to rise above the highest chip edge on the floor. Miss that and the tips stay proud, the floor feels gritty, and those tips take the wear first. A fine broadcast presents more tips per square foot, so it drinks more clear. A large chip presents fewer, taller tips, and one well-built coat covers them.
That is exactly why some price sheets charge by chip size. Ours does not. If your size needs a second clear coat to bury properly, it gets a second clear coat, and the number at the bottom of the quote is the same one you were given at the walkthrough. Choosing a size in three questions
- Where will you usually be standing? If the garage doubles as a room you look into from a doorway or a kitchen step, go bigger so the pattern still exists at that distance. If you mostly see the floor while walking on it, smaller works.
- What hits this floor in winter? Daily driver, salted roads, an unheated attached garage: a quarter inch, every time. It sweeps better and forgives more.
- Do you want a color or a pattern? An eighth of an inch and below gives you a color with texture. A quarter inch and above gives you a visible pattern. Neither is wrong; they are different rooms.
