Can an Old Oil Stain Show Through a New Floor?
Whether the dark patch under the car ghosts back through a finished coating, what actually goes wrong instead, and the test sequence that proves a slab is clean before anything is applied.

An oil stain almost never ghosts through as a dark patch, because the finished floor is not see-through. A pigmented base coat with flake broadcast into it until the slab stops taking more is fully opaque. Color does not travel through that. What an untreated stain does instead is quieter and much worse: the oil sits in the pores where the coating needs to grip, so the bond never forms over that exact rectangle. Six months to two years later the outline of your old parking spot reappears as blisters, small craters, or a sheet you can peel up with a putty knife. The stain does not come back as a shadow. It comes back as a failure.

Three different things people call a stain
Homeowners point at one dark patch, but there are three separate conditions hiding under that word, and only one of them is a real problem.
Surface grease. Fresh drips and a greasy film sitting on top of the concrete. A scraper, a degreaser and a wet vac take it off in an afternoon.
Absorbed oil in the top layer. Years of drips wicked into roughly the top eighth of an inch. This is the common case, and it is the case that grinding solves outright, because the grinder removes that concrete rather than trying to wash it.
Saturated concrete. Oil driven deeper than any grinder reasonably goes, usually under a long-running leak, or oil that found a crack and traveled along it. This is uncommon and it is the only version that needs a real conversation.
The whole prep argument is about telling these three apart before a drop of product goes down, not after. That is what the tests below are for.
When a stain genuinely does show
There are two narrow cases where you can actually see an old stain in the finished floor, and both come down to what was specified rather than what was in the concrete.
The first is a thin, clear or lightly tinted system with only a light flake scatter. Light sand and cream blends over a partial broadcast leave enough translucency for a deep patch to read as a faint shadow at a low viewing angle. A full broadcast in a mid-tone blend does not.
The second is a solid-color coating with no flake at all. There the stain does not show as color either, but any residue left behind shows as texture: round bare spots where the wet coating pulled away from a contaminant point. Installers call those fisheyes. They are visible from standing height and they are permanent short of a recoat.
Neither case is really the stain showing through. Both are contamination announcing itself through a finish that had no depth to hide it.
The decontamination sequence, step by step
Every one of these steps has a pass condition you can look at. That matters more than the step list itself, because it is the pass condition that turns prep from a promise into something you can check.

Two things people get wrong here. Flooding the floor with a hose instead of vacuuming pushes dissolved oil sideways and back down into the pores, spreading the problem rather than removing it. And skipping straight from degreasing to coating skips the only step that physically removes contaminated concrete. The short version
The stain will not read through an opaque flake floor. Untreated oil breaks the bond instead, and the old parking rectangle returns as blisters or peeling. Degrease, grind, look again, degrease the survivors, then prove it with a water test before anything is coated.

The water test, and how to watch it
This is the part to insist on, because it is the one moment where the answer is visible to anyone standing there. After the grind and the vacuum, clean water goes down in a grid across the slab, with extra attention on the drip zone. Clean, open concrete pulls water in almost immediately and turns visibly darker. Oily concrete rejects it: the water holds as beads, sits as flat droplets that will not sink, or spreads out with a faint rainbow sheen on the edge.
Ask the crew to run it in front of you and take a phone photo of the ground slab before the base coat goes on. That photo is your receipt. If a coating ever does lift, the difference between a clean bare slab in the picture and a shadowed one is the difference between a warranty claim and an argument. It is the same logic behind the standardized pull-off adhesion test for coatings on concrete: bond is something you verify, not something you assume.
Run one companion check while you are down there. Tape a square of clear plastic sheet to the slab on all four edges and leave it overnight. Condensation under it the next morning means moisture is moving up through the concrete, which is a separate problem from oil with a separate fix. When the stain wins
Occasionally it does, and any installer who says otherwise has not seen enough slabs. If oil has soaked through a crack or a cold joint, it keeps wicking back to the surface no matter how much you grind, because the reservoir is below the depth you are working at. A slab under a decades-long transmission leak can be contaminated an inch down.
At that point there are three honest paths. Saw out and replace that section of concrete, then coat over new material. Prime the area with an oil-tolerant primer and accept a defined higher-risk patch, written into the paperwork so nobody is surprised later. Or leave that section uncoated. What we will not do is coat a slab we cannot get clean and then write a guarantee we expect to be called on. Contamination is one of the main reasons garage floor coatings fail, and it is entirely preventable at the prep stage.
In this corridor there is a seasonal wrinkle worth knowing. Unheated attached garages around Kenosha and Racine stay cold and damp for months, and brine-laden meltwater running off the vehicle spreads whatever is on the slab outward from the drip zone. What is inside the price
