Recoating Over an Old Garage Floor: When It Works and When to Grind
How to test whether your existing coating can carry a new one, what the prep involves, and the point at which starting over is the cheaper option.

You can recoat over an existing garage floor coating, but only if the old one is still fully bonded. A sound floor that has simply lost its gloss is an excellent candidate: abrade it, clean it, and put a fresh clear topcoat over the top for a fraction of the cost of starting again. A floor that is peeling, blistering or lifting anywhere is not a candidate, because a new coat inherits the old coat's grip on the concrete - which is exactly what has already failed. The tests below will tell you which situation you are in.

Three tests before you decide
The tape test. Press a strip of strong packing tape or duct tape firmly onto the coating in several places across the floor, then rip it off fast. If flakes of coating come away with the tape, the bond is already compromised and a recoat will not fix it.
The edge walk. Walk the whole perimeter, both sides of every control joint, the door threshold and around any crack. These are where delamination starts. Any lifting edge means the failure has begun even if the middle of the floor looks fine.
The tap test. Tap across the floor with a screwdriver handle or a coin. A well-bonded coating sounds solid and dead. A hollow or drummy note means the coating has released from the concrete underneath, even where it has not yet lifted visibly.
When recoating works
The ideal candidate is a floor that has aged rather than failed: the gloss has softened in the tire paths, the flake and colour are intact, every edge is tight, and all three tests come back clean. That describes a lot of ten-year-old professional floors, and putting a fresh polyaspartic topcoat over one is genuinely good value, because the expensive work - the diamond grind and the base coat - is already done and still sound.
It also works for a specific upgrade case: an epoxy floor that has ambered near the door but is otherwise well bonded. When to grind it off instead
- Any peeling or lifting. The bond to the concrete has failed. A new layer bonds to the old layer, not to the slab, so it comes off together.
- Blistering. That is moisture pressure from below, and sealing another layer on top raises the pressure rather than relieving it.
- A drummy or hollow sound over large areas. Released but not yet visibly lifted, which is a failure in progress.
- Unknown history. If nobody knows what is down there or how the slab was prepared, the safe assumption is that it was not prepared well.
- Floor paint. Not a coating system, never a sound base for one. It has to come off.

The short version
Dull but tight everywhere: recoat, and save most of the cost. Lifting, blistering or drummy anywhere: grind it off. A new coat can only be as well attached as the coat beneath it.
What the recoat prep involves
A cured coating is smooth and chemically inert, so a new coat has nothing to key into unless the surface is opened up. That means mechanically abrading the entire floor - screen-sanding or light grinding - until the whole surface carries a uniform dull matte finish with no glossy patches left. Any spot still shiny is a spot where the new coat will not hold.
After abrading, the floor is vacuumed and cleaned to remove all sanding dust, and any contaminated areas are degreased. Cracks or chips that appeared since the original install get repaired at this stage, the same way they would on bare concrete. Only then does the new topcoat go down.
What recoating does not involve is a full diamond grind to bare concrete, which is exactly where the savings come from - and also exactly why the existing bond has to be sound.

The cost comparison
Recoating is cheaper because it skips the most labour-intensive stage. Grinding a fully bonded coating off a slab is slow, dusty work and it can cost as much as the original installation before a drop of new product goes down. Against that, a recoat is abrasion, cleaning and one topcoat.
The saving is only real if the diagnosis is right. Recoating a floor that was going to fail anyway means paying for the recoat, then paying for the removal and the full system afterwards. When the three tests are ambiguous, the honest answer is usually to grind. We assess this as part of the free quote rather than guessing from a photograph.
